Business Innovation Stream Subclass 188A

This 5-year temporary visa is for people with business ownership and management experiences who wish to establish business ownership and manage a new or existing business in Australia.

You can apply for a permanent Business Innovation and Investment (permanent) visa (subclass 888) Innovation stream if you meet the 888A visa requirements.

To be eligible, you must demonstrate the following:
  • Be nominated by a state or Territory government agency to apply for the visa
  • Have an overall successful career in business
  • Ownership of a business with a turnover of at least AUD 750,000 for at least 2 of the last four fiscal years; and
  • Net personal and business assets of at least AUD 1,250,000; and
  • Under 55 years of age, unless the nominating state or territory certifies that the applicant will make an exceptional economic benefit; and
  • Meet the pass mark in the Business innovation and investment Points test (currently 65 points)

  • English language ability
  • Qualifications
  • Experience in business or investment
  • Net personal and business assets
  • Business turnover
  • Innovation

Investor Stream (Subclass 188B)

If you are willing to make a designated investment of at least AUD 1.5 million in an Australian state or territory and maintain business activity in Australia, you can apply for the visa under this stream.

Investor Stream (Subclass 188B)

This 5-year temporary visa requires you to invest at least AUD2.5 million in Australian investments that meet specific requirements and maintain business or investment activity in Australia.

You can apply for a permanent Business Innovation and Investment (permanent) visa (subclass 888) Investor stream if you meet the 888B visa requirements.

To be eligible:
  • To be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government to apply for the visa.
  • The applicant has had business and personal net assets of at least AUD 2.5 million for the last two fiscal years
  • Under 55 years of age, unless the nominating state or territory certifies that the applicant will make an exceptional economic benefit; and
  • The applicant must make a complying investment
  • Have three years of experience either managing a qualifying business or “eligible investments” and have shown a high level of management skill For at least 1 of the five fiscal years, you have either:
    • Managed a business in which you hold a 10% shareholding: or
    • Manage “eligible investments” of at least AUD 1.5 million
Eligible investments include:
  • Ownership interests in a business
  • Cash on deposit
  • Stocks or bonds
  • Real estate
  • Gold or bullion
  • Loan to a business

Significant Investor Stream (Subclass 188C)

If you are willing to invest at least AUD 5 million into complying significant investments in Australia and maintain business activity in Australia, you can apply for the visa under this stream.

Significant Investor Stream (Subclass 188C)

This is a 5-year temporary visa for people willing to make an AUD 5 million investment in Australia. After maintained an investment in Australian for 4 years, the applicant can apply for permanent residence through the Business Innovation & Investment (Residence) Subclass 888 visa.

  • Invest at least AUD 5 million in complying with significant investments in Australia.
  • Be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency or Austrade.
Advantages of the SIV 188 visa:
  • No upper age limit,
  • No English Language requirement,
  • No Points Tests
  • Provides for at least 2 Extensions – of 2 years each (if extension requirements are met)
  • Lower residence requirement (40 days per year for main applicant or 180 days for spouse) to apply for the 888 Permanent visa.

Entrepreneur Stream (Subclass 188E)

Compared with 188A and B, 188E visa applicants do not need to have business management experience and do not need personal net worth requirements.

You can apply for a permanent Business Innovation and Investment (permanent) visa (subclass 888) Investor stream if you meet the 888B visa requirements.

To be eligible:
  • Need to be recognized by the Territory Nominating State Government Agency.
  • Individual provinces require applicants to obtain an investment of no less than 200,000 Australian dollars from a "qualified third party"
  • “Eligible third parties” include: Australian federal government agencies, state governments, publicly funded research or innovation organizations and Australian VCLP (Venture Capital Limited Partnership) or ESVCLP (Early-Stage Investment Limited Partnership) members
  • Under 55 years old
  • English proficiency of IELTS 6 or above
  • Start a business or propose to create a compliant business activity
  • Intend to carry out business activities in Australia and have real plans
  • Have enough assets to settle in Australia
